Biography

Rohit Priyadarshi Sanatani is a researcher and PhD candidate in Design Computation and Advanced Urbanism at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Rohit’s interests lie in data-driven lines of inquiry into the experiential and affective qualities of urban environments. His recent work has focused on the creation of design assistance and evaluation systems that help designers and planners to systematically engage with such complex and subjective qualities of the public realm. Rohit is a PhD fellow at the MIT Norman B Leventhal Center for Advanced Urbanism, and works with the MIT Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL) on generative-AI workflows for urban design. He has also been associated with the MIT Senseable City Lab, where his work has revolved primarily around large-scale urban visual analytics.

Rohit graduated with a dual Master of Science in Design Computation and in Computer Science from MIT. Prior to that, he was associated as Assistant Professor at the Department of Urban Design, School of Planning and Architecture (SPA), New Delhi, and has also worked on multiple masterplan development schemes across India. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Architecture from IIEST, Shibpur, and a M.Arch (Urban Design) from CEPT University, Ahmedabad.

Beauty Lies in the Eyes of the Beholder - Rohit Sanatani

A cross-cultural study of urban beauty shows that perceptions vary widely across individuals. Using Google Street View images and participant rankings from 20 countries, the research found no shared standards of beauty and no demographic explanations. While individuals were internally consistent, beauty judgments were deeply subjective, challenging data-driven approaches to urban design.
